The New Face of Poverty: The Influence of Social Transformation on the Distribution of Wealth

In recent years, Taiwan has seen the emergence of a "new class of poor", which defies the traditional definition of poverty. Under the influence of globalization, capital, equipments and work opportunities circulate at an amazing pace and those who cannot keep up with these transformations are unfortunately left behind to become "employable unemployed people".

Those who have the ability and the skills to work but cannot find a job are the new poor. They do not fit the regular definition of poverty: too well off to benefit from the social welfare resources usually at the disposal of  the most disadvantaged people but still in an unstable financial predicament that makes them unable to make ends meet, the "new poor" simply fall through the social safety net and are left to fend for themselves. This conference aims to shed light on this growing phenomenon and try to understand how, despite continuous social changes, we can achieve a more equal distribution of wealth in our society.
